Stephenson Area High School held its annual "An Evening with the Arts" on May 2. It is an end-of-the-year event that features artwork and performance art by students, from ceramics and paintings to a Jazz and concert band. Several hundred pieces were showcased throughout the halls of the High School. Performances in the Performing Arts included musical solos, guitar and piano playing and much more. As always, the event was packed with not only the artwork and talent, but also the students who created them and those who came to admire. Taking part in the event were: from left front, Jesse Pfeiffer, Tyler Eckert, art teacher Terra Stenberg, Autumn Martin, and Adriana Brown; back row, Chelsea Turcotte, Lauren Bartell, Erin Berger, Samy Tickler, Katelyn Dantinne, Ryan Jackson, Darien Kent, and Courtney Gypp (with her little sister).
One of the art exhibits, at right, is a “Contour wrapped animal.” Students are asked to pick an animal and then wrap it, mummy style, following the contour or shape of the animal. The wraps are then shaded to give the illusion of being 3D. The eyes, nose, & mouth are shaded realistically to give the illusion of the animal peeking beneath the wraps. According to teacher, Terra Stenberg, “This is a difficult assignment for the students to do because they must imagine what the animal would look like wrapped. The wraps cannot be straight or too hard or the animal will look flat. With their imagination and a lot of persistence and hard work, they are successful.
