ESCANABA - Alida Mary (LaBonte) Prey, 90, of 947 Stephenson Ave., Escanaba, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, surrounded by her loving family, at her home in Escanaba. She was born Oct. 4, 1922, in Spalding, Mich., and was the daughter of Napolean and Aldia (Betters) LaBonte Sr. Alida graduated from Powers/Spalding High School in 1940. The former Alida LaBonte married Kermit (Kurt) Prey on May 1, 1944, in Detroit, Mich., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 12, 2005.
Alida worked at the original J.C. Penney store in Escanaba as the manager of the children's department. She and her husband were instrumental in organizing the first St. Vincent de Paul Store located in the St. Thomas the Apostle Church Convent. Alida was a charter member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, and the St. Thomas Ladies Guild. She was an avid reader; enjoyed going to camp, snowmobiling, but her greatest joy in life was spending time with family.
Alida is survived by: sons, Carey (Sharon) Prey of Escanaba, Daryl (Fran) Prey of Escanaba; daughters, Jacqueline Swanson of Alaska, Paulette (Robert) Potvin of Escanaba; son-in-law, Paul Smith of Pinckey, Mich,; grandchildren, Natalie Raymond, Corey, Jason and Stephanie Potvin, Bradley Prey and Rachel Hirn, Jared, Travis and Justin Swanson, and Nathan and Matthew Prey; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, Napolean (Joanne) LaBonte Jr. of Spalding, Clell LaBonte of Spalding, Lemrod (Ethel) LaBonte of Spalding, Stephen LaBonte of Spalding; sister-in-law, Mary Lee LaBonte of Hermansville; numerous nieces and Nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by daughters, Debra and Jewell; sisters, Lois, Guinevere, Valeria and Joan; brother, Kermit; son-in-law, Ron Swanson; sister-in-law, Dianna LaBonte; and brothers-in-law, Melvin Gulseth, John Sperko and Victor Larson.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Liturgical Prayers will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial for Alida Mary (LaBonte) Prey will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Father Rick Courier officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services in the St. Thomas Catholic Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will take place following the luncheon at Holy Cross Cemetery.
