GLADSTONE - A combined 19 varsity letters are shared between the two top athletic award winners at Gladstone High School - Jared Vuksan and Jessica Young.
The Eldon (Cappy) Keil award, given out Wednesday night at the Gladstone honors program, was given to Vuksan, who holds nine varsity letters in football (3), basketball (2) and track (4). Vuksan was an All-U.P. football player in 2011 and holds the school record for shot put and discus and the Upper Peninsula record in shot put. He will attend Division II Northern Michigan University this fall on an athletic scholarship to play football.
Young was presented with the Senior Female Athlete Award after earning 10 varsity letters in cheer (7) and track (3).
Young was named All-State in discus in 2011 and 2012 and All-State in shot put in 2012. In 2012, she won the U.P. Finals in discus. Young was also named academic All-State in 2011, 2012 and 2013. She will attend Bay de Noc Community College in the fall.
Both awards are given out to the top male and female senior athletes as selected by the head varsity coaches. The Keil award began in 1961 and the Girls Athletic Award began in 1974.
Other award winners for Gladstone Wednesday night included Alison Austin and Kyle Kleiman who won the United States Army Scholar Athlete Awards as the top academic male and female athletes. Austin has a 3.94 GPA and eight varsity letters and Kleiman holds a 3.80 GPA with eight varsity letters.
The Peter Chouinard Memorial Award went to Josh Kadish, as the senior wrestler who has demonstrated hard work, dedication and pride.
The David Stade Memorial Award for the top senior golfer went to Ben Lasecki. The Brian Butler Award for the top senior football player selected by his teammates was shared by Blake Ballard and Steve Strom. The Robert Young "Heart" Award, presented to the varsity football players who puts his team first went to Vuksan.
The Buchmiller Memorial Award and Scholarship, given annually to a senior female athlete who puts their team first and has a positive attitude, demonstrating leadership, work ethic and pride went to Jordan Kowalski.
The Irving C. Houle Track Award, presented to a male senior track athlete who has demonstrated a passion and love for the sport of track was shared by Justin Pederson and Jared Vuksan.
The Chelsea Hewitt Memorial Scholarship Award, awarded annually in memory of Chelsea Hewitt who died tragically in an automobile accident during her sophomore year. The award is given to the person who emulates who Chelsea was - a kind loving person who put others first and was active in her school and community. Grace Zimmermann received the award.
