U.P. blood supply needs summer boost

May 17, 2013
Daily Press

Delta County residents are gearing up for the "official" arrival of summer with the Memorial Day holiday. Given the few short months of summer in the U.P. - and the prospect of another long winter ahead - residents tend to try to cram a year's worth of living into three months.

We all get busy enjoying summer, and that causes a dilemma for the Red Cross locally and in the rest of the country every year. Because people are so preoccupied in the summer months, blood donations tend to drop off. That impacts the supply of blood overall - locally and throughout the nation.

Donating blood is one of the most precious gifts a person can give. Essentially, you are giving life and helping countless others in times of dire need. If you regularly donate blood, keep it up, and don't forget to take the time to give blood during the summer months. If you are not a blood donor, seriously consider donating blood if you are able.

The next opportunity to donate blood locally is just around the corner. The Red Cross will be holding a blood drive at the Delta Plaza mall in Escanaba on Tuesday, May 28, from noon to 6 p.m., and Wednesday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Giving blood is simple, and according to the Red Cross, all blood types are needed to make sure there is a reliable supply for persons in need. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are needed to be a blood donor. Anyone who is 17 (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood, according to the Red Cross. High school students and other donors 18 and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

You can find out more about becoming a blood donor and what's involved at redcrossblood.org

Donating blood is a small task that could make a big impact in someone else's life.
