ST. IGNACE - A woman who broke into a Mackinac County motel and stole several items Monday morning was easily nabbed by police when she accidentally locked herself in the get-away vehicle.

According to Michigan State Police from the St. Ignace Post, a 42-year-old woman from Curtis allegedly broke into Chamberlain's Inn located off Manistique Lakes Road in Portage Township.

Troopers said the suspect stole food, dishes, silverware, and other consumable goods which she loaded into her vehicle while the motel was occupied by two overnight guests.

"During the course of the theft, the suspect unknowingly lost the keys to the vehicle and after loading and getting into it, realized she was locked inside because the inside door latches were broken," explained troopers in a news release.

State police were dispatched to the scene at 7:35 a.m. When law enforcement arrived, the suspect was found locked inside the vehicle without a key. She needed the key to roll down the electric window so she could open the door using the outside door handle.

The suspect was arrested for home invasion and larceny in a building and lodged in Mackinac County Jail. She is expected to be arraigned in Mackinac County District Court today, according to a court official.
