HARRIS - The Rapid River boys' track team continued its winning ways Tuesday, dominating the Second Annual Bark River-Harris Invitational with 193 1/2 points.

Rapid River, scoring in all but one event, was followed by defending champ BR-H 105 1/2 and Big Bay de Noc 64.

"We hadn't been able to do much since our invitational (on Thursday) because of the (cold) weather," said Rapid River boys' coach Steve Ostrenga. "We're glad to get this meet in. We also appreciate them having us here and all the work by (girls' coach) Greg Rubick. We were a little concerned coming in here because we had a lot of shin problems. We want to be healthy going into the (Division 3) regional on Thursday."

The BR-H girls retained their crown with 151 points, followed by Mid Peninsula 114 and Rapid River 81.

Junior Jake Pearson led the Rapid River boys, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.81 seconds and 200 (23.71) and taking second in shot put and discus.

"Jake had a sore throat and cold on Thursday, but did well for us today," said Ostrenga. "I think our distance people ran a lot tougher today and our field events did well. I'm happy with our whole team. Although, we still have things to work on."

Freshman Dan Blair won the 1600 (5:00.72) and 3200 (11:16) and helped the Rockets take the 3200 relay.

Mid Peninsula senior Brett Branstrom took shot put with a school-record heave of 49 feet, three inches. He also won discus (141-6) and tied for first with Big Bay de Noc junior Cole Potvin in high jump (5-8).

"I hadn't thrown since the Rapid River Invitational," said Branstrom. "When I was throwing the shot, I didn't worry about anything. I just let it go. I had a few bad throws in disc, so I have a few kinks to work out. I need to keep working on my form and explosiveness in the circle."

Potvin won the 400 in a school-record 51.8 seconds and was runner-up to Pearson in the 200 by .12 second (23.83). He also placed second in the 1600.

"I didn't start as fast as usual in the 400, but picked it up in the end," said Potvin. "I think the 1600 got my legs moving for the 400. I've gotten used to the short break between the 1600 and 400, so now I know I can do it in the regional. The 200 was a good race. Jake and I are always pretty close. I thought things went pretty good today."

The BR-H girls scored 62 points in the field events, with senior Alex Parrotta winning high jump (5-0), classmate Sydnie Petrie taking discus (106-10) and Kim Palo first in pole vault (6-6).

"We really did well in the field events," said BR-H coach Katina Demers. "We made a few adjustments and they worked well for us. Three girls placed for us in pole vault and that really helped us. Kortney Jenshak had her best time all year in the 200 (winning in 28.49) and we put Katie Schultz back in the sprint relays and that also helped us. Plus, it was nice having some of our kids back in the distances. This was good preparation for the regional."

Schultz added seconds in the 200 and 400 and helped the Broncos take both sprint relays.

Superior Central junior Teslyn Tyner was a double-winner, capturing the 100 (13.19) and long jump (14-2 1/2).

Mid Pen freshman Sarah Hanson won the 1600 (6:17.62) and 3200 (13:54) and placed second in long jump (13-7).

"We had perfect weather today," said Hanson. "It was just the right temperature (near 60) and I felt pretty comfortable on the track. Although, I think I could have done a little better in the 1600. I was trying for 14 feet in long jump. I need a little more acceleration (on the runway)."
