MANISTIQUE - Elmer O. "Pete" Hamiel, 86, of Manistique, Mich., passed away on Wednesday morning, May 8, 2013, at the Wooodland Meadows.
Pete was born May 29, 1926, in Manistique, the son of Charles Elmer and Rose (Sautter) Hamiel. He attended Manistique High School and after high school, proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in Europe.
On Nov. 27, 1954, Pete married the former Muriel Louis in Manistique. He retired from the Inland Lime and Stone Company after many years. Pete was also a small business owner for many years. He owned and operated The Bike Shop. His garage was always open to the local children as well as to anyone biking around Lake Michigan. Some of whom he would let camp in his backyard.

Pete was a member of the VFW and the United Steel Workers Union. He served as an assistant Boy Scout Master and was associated with Habitat for Humanity. Pete was also a master woodworker. Several of his items are on display at the Seul Choix Point Lighthouse. He was always willing to lend a hand. His construction talents benefitted many over the years including the Girl Scouts Camp Hideaway, Habitat for Humanity and numerous family and friends.
Pete is survived by his wife, Muriel Hamiel of Manistique; his son, Charles (Nancy) Hamiel of Stow, Ohio; two daughters, Cindy (John) Godsey of Eagle River, Ark., and Carla (Chris) Daly of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, John, Andrew and Katherine Daly of Charlotte, N.C., and Maggie Godsey of Eagle River, Ark. He is further survived by his two sisters, Lillian Pantazopulos of Midland, Mich., and Ruth (Bill) Downs of Sherrill, Iowa. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Hamiel; one sister, Clara Brauer, and four brothers, Earl, Dan, Chuck and Bud Hamiel.
A Celebration of Pete's life will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Burial will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, June 21, at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Elmer's name, may be made to the American Diabetes Association..
