RAPID RIVER - The Rapid River boys passed a major test Thursday, winning their own track invitational with 117 points. Runner-up North Dickinson scored 101, with Forest Park third at 63.

Senior Robert Metter was Rapid River's lone individual winner, soaring 11 feet, six inches in pole vault.

The Rockets, however, had second-place finishes in six events, including two each by junior Jake Pearson and freshman Dan Blair.

Pearson took second in shot put (46-3 1/2) and discus (123-0) and Blair did likewise in the 1600-meter run in five minutes, 19.84 seconds and 3200 (11:33.4) on this cloudy, windy and chilly day.

Senior Zac Dominique added a second in the 800 (2:17.97). He and Blair also helped the second-place 3200 relay on a day which temperatures dropped at least 10 degrees during the meet.

"We had enough depth to come through," said Rockets' coach Steve Ostrenga. "The weather conditions weren't the greatest, although it was the same for everybody. You still have to be able to perform in these conditions. We had to sub in the sprint relays and Shane Norberg and Dave Hough really came through for us. We had a lot of seconds. Depth matters. We need to have some improvement, though."
