ESCANABA - LaVona Rae Sarasin, 79, passed away on May 6, 2013, at St. Francis Hospital after struggling with a long term illness.
The daughter of Homer and Edith (Lafreniere) French, LaVona was born in Bark River, Mich., on Feb. 2, 1934. LaVona had many fond memories of growing up in Nahma, Mich., where the family relocated to in 1941. She was a 1952 graduate of Nahma High School. On Oct. 9, 1954, LaVona was united in marriage to Harold "Pete" Sarasin. Together the couple raised their children in Oak Creek, Wis., and Santa Barbara, Calif. In 1991 LaVona and Pete retired to Escanaba where they became members of St. Anne's Catholic Parish. Pete preceded LaVona in death on May 29, 2002. LaVona was dedicated to her children and loved spending time with her family. She looked forward to her family reunions on the Stonington Peninsula each year. She will be deeply missed by many.
Survivors include: sons, Peter (Gail) Sarasin of Tigerton, Wis., Stephen (Cheryl) Sarasin of South Milwaukee, Wis., Tom (Betty) Sarasin of South Milwaukee, Wis., Mike (Loretta Peterson) Sarasin of Kenosha, Wis., Greg Sarasin of Escanaba, Mich., Ted (Donna) Sarasin of Lompoc, Calif., Kenny Sarasin of Escanaba, Mich.; daughter, Joan (Jeff) Venable of Atkinson, Maine; her loving sister, Verna (Jack) Trinkle of Anderson, Ind.; and her dearest niece, Carla Sullivan of Escanaba, Mich.

LaVona is also survived by 14 wonderful grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Along with Pete, LaVona was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Edith; an infant son, Daniel; five brothers and four sisters.
The Sarasin family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Fran DeGroot officiating. Luncheon will follow mass on Friday in the St. Anne Parish Hall. LaVona will be laid to rest following luncheon in the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Delta County are assisting the Sarasin family with arrangements.
