MARQUETTE - Former Northern Michigan University senior offensive tackle Jace Daniels of Escanaba signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following an invitation to the franchise's rookie mini-camp this weekend.
Before stepping on a plane to return from Tampa, Fla. on Sunday, Daniels confirmed the invite to the team's 2013 training camp with The Mining Journal via text message after sending out an initial tweet from his account (twitter.com/J_Daniels74) that read, "Signed on the dotted line now time for camp! #GoBucs."
The Buccaneers have not officially announced the signing of Daniels yet. With 90 players currently on the roster, the team will have to release someone to make room for Daniels.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound left tackle started all 11 games for NMU during his junior and senior years, earning All-GLIAC second-team honors in 2011 and first-team accolades in 2012.
If the Buccaneers decided not to keep Daniels after this weekend's rookie camp, the 2009 Escanaba graduate also had an invite to the New York Giants' rookie camp this week.
Tampa Bay was Daniel's preferred choice after going undrafted because it was the lone franchise that had his back from start to finish, Daniels said.
"They were the only team that stuck with me through the whole thing," Daniels said on April 28 after the draft. "They're the ones taking a shot on me right now, so that's why I decided to go with them."
