Scott Only Simmons

RAPID RIVER - Scott Only Simmons, 74, of 10570 N. Main St., Rapid River, Mich. (formerly of Newberry and Breckenridge, Mich.), passed away Friday evening, May 3, 2013, at the Christian Park Health Care Center in Escanaba.

Scott was born Oct. 28, 1938, in Mount Pleasant, Mich., the son of Donald Van and Rosie May (Winesburgh) Simmons. Scott was raised in Mount Pleasant where he was a 1956 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School.

Scott was united in marriage to the former Elsie Detzler on Jan. 31, 1959, in Shepherd, Mich. They made their home in Breckenridge, Mich., where they raised their four sons. Scott was a truck driver for Coastal Tank Line and Chemical Lehman Trucking. Following his retirement in 1990, they purchased and operated the Pine Stump Junction Bar in Newberry. Together they operated the bar until Elsie's death in 2008. Scott sold the bar in 2011 and retired to Rapid River. He was a lifetime member of the N.R.A.

Scott was an avid hunter. He especially enjoyed bear hunting with his dogs and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

Survivors include: sons, Mark (Rita) of Cynthiana, Ky., Matt (Jennifer) of St. Louis, Mich., Mike (Christine) of Alma, Mich, and Mitchell (Rozzella) of Rapid River; sister, Sandra (Bill) Salchert of Mount Pleasant, Mich.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Scott Simmons will be held on Tuesday, May 7, at 1 p.m. at the Rapid River Congregational Church in Rapid River with Rev. William Rafuse officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lux-Moody-Wolfel Funeral Home in Alma, Mich. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Simmons family.
