Lorayn Thorin

ESCANABA - Lorayn Thorin, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, April 30, 2013, at her home in Escanaba.

Lorayn was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Escanaba, the daughter of Henry and Margrit (Ettenhofer) Kasten. She was raised in Escanaba and was a 1942 graduate of Escanaba High School. Following school, Lorayn went on to attend Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba.

On May 24, 1946, Lorayn was united in marriage to Jon G. Thorin and together the couple made their home and raised their family in Escanaba. Throughout their marriage, Jon and Lorayn owned and operated "Jon Thorin Aviation." She was proud to have achieved her own private pilot's license in 1969 and was instrumental in the day to day operations of the aviation business, from 1956 to 2002. Her loving husband Jon preceded her in death on March 26, 2003.

Lorayn was a longtime member of the Central United Methodist Church in Escanaba. In addition she was a member of the Escanaba Eagles Club, Escanaba Elks Club and the AOPA (Aircraft Owner and Pilot's Association). She will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her son, Thomas (Miriam) Thorin of Lake Balboa, Calif.; sister, Grace Roberto of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandson, Michael Thorin; nieces, Janet Holtein, Susan Yaberg, Mary Margaret Clowers and Connie Shaw; nephews, Timothy Kasten, John Lawrence, Dan Lawrence and Dale Roberto; sister-in-law, Pat Thorin.

In addition to her parents, Henry and Margrit and her husband, Jon, Lorayn was preceded in death by her daughter, Kitty Thorin in 1993; brothers, Ralph and Clarence; sisters, Edna, Rose, Beatrice, Ella and Minnie; nephew, Noel Kasten.

Lorayn's family will receive friends on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Lorayn Thorin will follow visiting hours, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba, with Rev. Scott Harmon of the Central United Methodist Church officiating.

Lorayn will be laid to rest in the West Ford River Cemetery following funeral services.
