PERKINS - The Bark River-Harris girls reaped the benefits of a strong showing in the field events Tuesday, earning their second Central U.P. Conference track title in three years with 105 points.

They were followed by Rapid River 96 and defending champion Superior Central 62.

The Broncos scored 46 points in the field events, with senior Kim Palo winning pole vault at eight feet.

Superior Central’s Teslyn Tyner comes in for a landing on her long jump leap. Tyner won the event with a jump of 14-6, one of two firsts she had in Tuesday’s Central U.P. Conference track meet.

Classmate Sydnie Petrie took second in discus (101-3) and Alex Parrotta was runner-up in high jump (5-0).

"We did well in the field events," said BR-H coach Katina Demers. "Morgan VanLanen has really been throwing well and Sydnie has been very consistent with her throwing. I think this will give us momentum going into the rest of the season."

Competition in high jump was tight with Mid Peninsula senior Kayla Shope winning at 5-2 and North Central sophomore Baylee Wells third at 5-0.

Freshman Katie Schultz added a first in the 400-meter dash in 69.49 seconds for BR-H, which also won the 800 relay and was runner-up to Superior Central in the 400.

"Katie really stepped up in the (open) 400," said Demers. "Our sprint relays are really doing well, only we fell in the 400. We had one handoff that was bad, which probably cost us that race. Although, Superior Central is always tough in the relays. They're a deep team."

Rapid River freshman Shannon Gould won the 100 hurdles (19.01) and 300s (54.73) and senior Neena Brockway captured discus (107-9).

"Shannon did a nice job in hurdles," said Rockets' coach Greg Rubick. "For a freshman to step up and take two firsts is encouraging for our program. Neena is very consistent in disc. Only, she didn't throw as well as usual in the Delta County meet and I think she was a little disappointed. Neena throw well today, though. She also threw well in shot put."

Mid Pen senior Krysta VanDamme won shot put (31-4 1/2), with Brockway runner-up (31-1/2).

"We really had some surprise performances today," said Rubick. "We're happy with the way we responded to the conference meet. Lydia Froberg taking third in pole vault and Taylor Hedges fourth in shot were real nice surprises as was Erin Anderson stepping up and taking second in the open 800. What this does is gives us little bit of inspiration heading into the regionals (on May 16). As a team, we're a little more competitive than we thought.

"Bark River-Harris has a lot of speed, but it's the thirds, fourths and fifths that won them the meet. Superior Central also has a lot of nice athletes."

Superior Central junior Teslyn Tyner won the 100 (13.42), long jump (14-6) and led off the winning 400 and 1600 relays on this sunny and breezy day.

"I really didn't notice the wind (in the 1600 relay)," said Tyner. "I just focused on getting the best time I could. We also did well in the 400 relay, but we need to work on our handoffs. "I'm actually pleased with my time in the 100, although I'm still hoping to get down into the 12s. My steps were wrong again in long jump. I need to measure those a lot better."

Mid Pen's Sarah Hanson won the 1600 (6:30.26) and 3200 (14:39.2) and Munising senior Katilyn Marsh copped the 200 (29.29) and 800 (2:48.13).
