MANISTIQUE - Senior Kenner Broullire and several of his teammates stood on the track at the conclusion the Seventh Annual Manistique Kiwanis Invitational track meet Friday, anxiously awaiting the final results.

The news was good for the Emeralds as they learned they won the meet with 123 points. Defending champ Marquette was runner-up at 116 1/2, followed by Stephenson with 91 1/2.

"I'm very proud of our team today," said Broullire, who helped the Emeralds secure the decision with a victory in the day's final race, the 1600-meter relay. "It's exciting to win a meet this way. This is a good confidence builder for our team. Although, we still need to keep working hard."

Marquette, which was runner-up in the last relay, pulled within striking distance (113-108 1/2) by outscoring the Emeralds 20-1 in the 3200 run.

Junior Cole Rieboldt led the way for the Redman in the 3200, taking that race in a meet-record 10 minutes, 27.86 seconds.

"Our distance guys did a great job," said Marquette coach Kyle Detmers. "I thought our team performed well. Hats off to Manistique. They had a lot of PRs (personal records) today. Mary Lou (coach Lund) does a great job with their program."

Broullire, who will attend West Point this fall, won the 100 (11.7), edging Munising senior Lucas Gauthier by .02 second. He also took the 300 hurdles (41.7).

"I really didn't feel I ran to my full potential," said Broullire. "My legs were a little tight. It doesn't help anyone when it's about 40 degrees. I hit a couple hurdles today. My time is pretty close to where it was last year at this time, although there's lot of room for improvement."

Junior Ryan Ramey also helped the winning 1600 relay, won the 400 (53.56) and was runner-up to Gauthier in the 200 (24.02). Junior Tony Floyd added a first in long jump (18-4 1/2).

The Emeralds had a few mishaps in the sprint relays, dropping the baton in both, resulting in disqualification.

"We did a little experimenting and had two kids fall in those relays," said Lund. "We just need to work on handoffs and get a team that's going to be together. A lot of kids got times at the (Superior) Dome and they tried to cut some time off. Kenner and Ryan had solid days. Overall, our kids performed very well. It's always a big deal when you beat Marquette."

Marquette freshman Lance Rambo established a meet record in the 1600 (4:45.25) and Newberry seniorJames Sutton set a record in high jump at six feet, five inches.

The Marquette girls, as expected, retained their title with 207 points. They were followed by Manistique 89 and Gwinn 64.

Freshman Lindsey Rudden set meet records in the 1600 (5:19.35) and helped the Redettes win the 1600 and 3200 relays.

"I was happy with my time in the 1600, especially for being as cold as it is," said Rudden. "It felt good to finally get on an outside track and also run in a couple relays. I went faster than I thought I would. I thought all our girls did well today. We have a great team this year."

Sophomore teammate Shayna Huebner copped high jump with a meet-record leap of 5-2 and won the 800 (2:32.68) and sophomore Hunter Viitala took the 300 hurdles in a meet-record 50.24.

Superior Central junior Teslyn Tyner shattered the meet record in the 100 (13.41) by more than a half-second and added a record in long jump (15-7 1/2).

"My steps (in long jump) were off at first," said Tyner. "Then, I started using somebody else's marks and those worked. We also had the wind on our back which helped. But the wind was going against everybody in the 100 and cold air made it hard to breathe. We should be able to go outside more pretty soon, which can only help."

Manistique won the 800 relay and was runner-up to Marquette in the other three relays.

"I thought all our girls competed very well today," said Manistique coach Chris Marana. "We didn't run very well in the 1600 relay in the Dome, but we did much better today. It was nice to end on a postive note. We're very pleased with our overall effort."

At least nine meet records were established in this meet, including a jump of 8-3 in pole vault by Grand Marais/Munising Baptist's Michaela Peramaki.

"I'm kind of surprised to see that many records fall here today," said Marana. "The conditions were decent, but not phenomenal. Yet, in a way I'm not totally surprised because of the caliber of competition."
