ESCANABA - Right to Life (RTL) of Delta County recently held its 24th annual high school oratory contest at Bay de Noc Community College on April 9. Contestants prepared a five to seven minute speech on one of five topics: abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research, infanticide or human cloning.
Judges for the event were Bill Huebler, Jim Nelson and Kay Thompson Vanders.
Regional winners and their topics are: First place, Gabriella Byers of Crystal Falls, "Abortion and Genocide"; Second Place, Ben Rivard of Cornell, "Euthanasia"; Nick Rivard of Cornell, "Abortion". The prizes were $100, $75 and $50 provided by Right to Life of Delta County.

There were 23 regional contests throughout the state. This was the only Upper Peninsula contest. Local organizers were Carol Carlson and Mary Knoch. The first place winner will advance to the state competition in the Lansing area on May 18. Winner of the state competition will compete in the National RTL contest is Dallas Texas on June 21.
Prizes at the state level : $500, $300 and $200. Prizes at the National level: $1000, $750, $500 and $250.
