ESCANABA - An Escanaba man accused of sexually abusing and torturing his girlfriend's teenage son has waived his right to have a preliminary examination in court within 14 days of his arrest.

Carl James Pellinen, 47, was scheduled to appear in Delta County District Court this morning but temporarily waived the proceeding. The preliminary hearing will be rescheduled in district court or could be waived and automatically bound over to circuit court.

Pellinen and his girlfriend, Susan Marie Bardo, 46, were arrested earlier this month for first-degree child abuse, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, and torture, all life felonies.

The charges stem from alleged abuse and torture of Bardo's 15-year-old son during the past four years at their Escanaba residence, according to an investigation by Escanaba Public Safety.
