Donna Mae Smith

SPALDING - Donna Mae Smith, 62, passed away Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013, at her home following a two year battle with cancer. She was lovingly cared for by Greg and Clarice Veeser in her last days.

She was born on June 3, 1950, in Escanaba, daughter of Robert and Anna (Arkens) Motto. Donna attended grade school in Wilson and Bark River and graduated from Holy Name High School in 1968.

On Oct. 3, 1970, Donna married John Smith in Bark River. He preceded her in death in 2010.

Donna graduated from Career Academy in Milwaukee as a dental assistant. She worked for Dr. Roger Beauchamp. After the birth of her children, she stayed home to raise them until taking a job at Naser Oil and Propane until her retirement due to illness in 2011.

She loved baking with her grandchildren, golfing league with her friends at the Four Seasons, relaxing on her deck, watching cooking and home and garden TV shows, shopping with her daughters, watching the Packers, going to the casino and spending time with her sisters.

Donna lived in Spalding for 43 years.

Among survivors include her son, Chuck (Beth) Smith of Powers; daughter, Valerie (Dan) Oja of Superior, Wis.; and grandchildren, Spencer, Chandler, Miranda, Dylan, Wyatt, Olivia, Delaney, Ashtyn and Jayden; siblings, Anita (Ken) DuBois of Powers, Janice (Donald) Bal of Norway, Clarice (Greg) Veeser of Powers, Mark (Christine) Motto Wilson, Mike (Donna) Motto of Wilson, Brad (Theresa) Motto of Escanaba; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. (Central Time) at St. John Neumann Church in Spalding. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Michael Vichich officiating. Burial will be in Spalding Township Cemetery. The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Smith family.
