ELGIN, Ill. - Mona M. Hughes, 91, of Elgin, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born June 9, 1921, in Escanaba, the daughter of William "Bill" and Florence "Sally" Roth Desmond. She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northern Michigan University and was employed as a teacher by Holy Name Central Grade School for 10 years. She had been a resident of Elgin since 1987.
She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin.
Surviving are four daughters, Michelle "Mesha" Bright-Wood, Sally (Tomas) Malir, Nora Hughes and Patti Hughes; four grandchildren, Gretchen, Ethan, Sara Rose and Bridgette; one brother, Leslie "Les" (Nancy) Desmond and his four daughters, Debbie (Mike) Kimbro, Kathy (Bill) DeMoulin, Susie Madison and Karen (Rob) Olis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George Hughes in 1970; two brothers, William "Billy" and Fred Desmond.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Burial will be private in Escanaba. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and then on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of mass in the church.
