RIVERDALE, Mich - Dr. Arthur John ("A.J." or "Jo") Brown, 72, of Riverdale, Mich., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at MidMichigan Medical Center - Gratiot in Alma, Mich.

He was born Nov. 4, 1940, in Hancock, Mich., the son of John ("Jack") William Brown and Florence (Lamerand) Brown, both of whom preceded him in death. He spent most of his childhood and adult life in Manistique, Mich., and nearby Gulliver and always considered the area his home.

Arthur was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales School and Manistique High School with the Class of 1959. He spent many summers working at the family fishery in Whitefish Point, Mich. However, he chose a different path, and graduated from University of Michigan Dental School in 1966. For two years, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, stationed in Mainz, Germany. After discharge, Dr. Brown and his colleagues were instrumental in the planning and building of the Manistique Medical and Dental Center where he established a family dentistry practice. He enjoyed playing euchre and bridge, photography, displaying his collection of paintings and prints, and keeping a smile on the face of all who knew him.
