ESCANABA - The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a winter storm warning for the area. The warning will be in effect from 7 p.m. today until 11 a.m. Friday.

Six to nine inches of wet, accumulating snow are predicted during the storm with snowfall rates possibly reaching one to two inches per hour. Gusting winds may reach speeds as high as 30 miles per hour, especially near Lake Michigan, and could cause drifting. Visibility is expected to drop to one-half mile at times overnight.

"The combination is going to make for some really hazardous driving conditions," said Kevin Crupi, meteorologist.

The accumulated snow may stay for days, as below normal temperatures are expected to continue for the next week.
