Alfred L. Dahl

CORNELL - Alfred L. Dahl, 90, of Cornell, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers. He was born May 17, 1922, in Rapid River and was the son of Alfred J. and Mildred (Milks) Dahl.

Al grew up in Cornell and graduated from Rapid River High School in 1940. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. Al was an aerial gunner with the 446th Bombardment Group and received many commendations as a gunner for flying as an engineer with the lead crew. Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Army Air Force Al was employed with the Northern Motor Rebuilder's Company in Escanaba working, as an over the road truck driver in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota, retiring in 1981.

Al married the former Betty Benedict on May 15, 1948, in Oshkosh, Wis.

Al was a life member of the V.F.W., member of the Local Teamsters Union 328, Cornell Lions Club, and served on the Cornell Township Board for 28 years retiring last November. Al enjoyed the outdoors, snowmobiling, fishing, four wheeling, tinkering in the garage, and reading Westerns. His greatest love was spending time with his family at the camp on Gooseneck Lake.

Alfred L. Dahl is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Mary Jo Carlson of Cornell and Patti (Dale) Manninen of Watson; six grandsons, Jeremy (Carrie) Carlson, Jeff (Mary) Carlson, Ryan (Jeni) Dahl, Adam (Molly) Manninen, Todd Manninen and Paul (Erycca) Manninen; two great-grandchildren, Stephen Dahl and Chayse Beauchamp; brother, Robert A. (Sharon) Dahl of Cornell; son-in-law, Frank Sliva of Cornell; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by daughter, Karen Sliva; brother, Rudy Dahl; sister, Thedis Dahl; and nephew, Robert J. Dahl.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday April 7, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County Veteran's Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services celebrating the life of Alfred L. Dahl will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Judy Kincaid officiating. A luncheon will be served during the visitation hours in the Anderson Funeral Home fellowship area.

Burial will take place in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery.
