Leo Stanley Sape

PERRONVILLE - Leo Stanley Sape, 76, W509 G30 Road, Perronville, passed away late Wednesday evening, March 27, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on July 2, 1936, in LaBranche, son of Michael and Pauline (Pach) Sape. Leo was raised in Perronville and attended Bark River Harris School.

Leo served in the U.S. Army and during that time he soon found his talent in mechanics and engineering.

On Aug. 13, 1960, Leo married the former Joanne Mary Kosalka at St. Bart's Church in Detroit. She preceded him in death.

A master mechanic by the age of 28, Leo began what would become a respected 38-year career with the Operators Union and retired from Meriman Construction in 2000.

Leo was involved in local 324 Operating Engineers in Detroit and was just honored with his 50 year pin.

Known for being an outdoorsman and avid hunter, Leo found joy in outdoor activities shared with family. He could often be found in the woods, the garden, or behind the wheel of his snowmobile. Leo also enjoyed rebuilding his tractors, going to camp, and being in his pole barn working on things. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.

Among survivors include two sons, Thomas (Kristine) Sape of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and Robert (Lynn) Sape of Warren, Mich.; daughter, Janet (Sam) Zmick of Sterling Heights, Mich.; five grandchildren, Amanda, Jack, and Melanie Sape, Sarah and Adam Zmick; special friend, Rose Gaber of Perronville; brother, Louis Sape of Sterling Heights; half-brother, Ed Chartier; and half-sister, Marie Chartier.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joanne; infant sister, Dorothy; two brothers, Mike and John Sape.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. Military rites will be held by the Bark River American Legion Post 348 at 6 p.m. Parish prayers will be said at 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church with Rev. Darryl Pepin officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Perronville.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Sape family with arrangements.
