TAMPA, Fla. - Ethelyn B. Klug-Garrard, 98, passed away on Feb. 28, 2013, in Tampa, Fla. She was born in Holland Township, Mich., on Jan. 5, 1915. She graduated from Hope College with a bachelor of arts degree in education. In 1960 she started 20 years of teaching eighth grade English at Escanaba Junior High.
Ethelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius Schaap and Fannie Baarman; her husbands, Lawrence Klug and Dr. Marion Garrard; brother, Earl Schaap; and daughter, Kristine Klug.
She is survived by daughters, Suzanne Swanson of Schaumburg, Ill., Barbara (Paul) Christensen of Wheaton, Ill., and Pamela (Robert) Rice of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Laura Swanson, Kyle Swanson, Julie Lindstrom, Chad Lindstrom, Nathan Christensen, Nicole Rice, Matthew Rice; and four great-grandchildren, Marcello Guadagno, Gianluca Guadagno, Alyssa Lindstrom and Jayden Swanson.
Ethelyn resided in the Escanaba area until 1982 when she moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. For the last eight years she has lived in Tampa, Fla., at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility.
She was always very active in her church, loved to read, knit, and played golf into her 80s.
A memorial service will take place this summer in Escanaba with burial at Gardens of Rest Cemetery. Memorials can be sent to Lifepath Hospice in Tampa, Fla. or the First Presbyterian Church in Escanaba.
