Marinette Marine awarded LCS contract

March 8, 2013
Daily Press

MARINETTE - Lockheed Martin Corp. and Littoral Combat Ship partner Marinette Marine Corp. have been awarded a contract to build the next two Freedom Class LCS combat vessels at the Marinette shipyard.

According to an article in the Marinette-Menominee Eagle Herald, the $697 million contract will provide for the construction of LCS 13 and 15. Marinette Marine has already delivered two LCS to the Navy. The company now has a total of six more of the combat vessels under contract.

In light of budget talks ongoing at the U.S. Capitol, word of the contract came as happy news to officials at Marinette Marine.

"Obviously for us, with all the budget uncertainties that are going on, this is great news, and I think it's a testament to the good work that we do here," Chuck Goddard, Marinette Marine Corp. president and CEO, was quoted as saying in the Eagle Herald's Tuesday article.

USS Freedom (LCS 1), built by Marinette Marine, became the first littoral combat ship put into action when it left its port of San Diego March 1. The ship is making its maiden deployment to Singapore.
