Clarence Robert Benoit

ESCANABA - Clarence Robert Benoit, 81, of Escanaba, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.

Clarence was born June 22, 1931, in Escanaba. He is the son of the late Ernest and Eva (Dubord) Benoit. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1949 and was an active member of the "49's club." Late in life he attended Bay College to further his education and become a millwright. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

He married his first wife Mary Lou Ward on Sept. 16, 1950, at St Anne's Rectory. Together they had seven children. She preceded him in death.

On Aug. 28, 1999, Clarence married the former Janet Servant-Richer at St Anne's Church in Escanaba.

Clarence was a hardworking man. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Harnischfeger Corporation and then as a millwright until his retirement. He was a member of the Eagles Club; a former member of the Highland Golf Club and an avid bowler.

He is survived by his wife, Janet and dog, Precious; his children, Barbara (Dennis Zanetti) Taetsch of St. Clair Shores, Mich., Mike (Colleen) Benoit of Kenosha, Wis., Bonnie (Dennis) Koenig of Highland Beach, Fla., Peggy (Mike) Fleming of Bakersfield, Calif., Dean (Kathy) Benoit of Orland Park, Ill., Penny Erickson of Gladstone, Sandy (Joe) Derouin of Bark River, and Rick (Lisa) Benoit of Escanaba; grandchildren, Scott, Nikki and Kristine Taetsch, Shawn and Cory Benoit, Tony and Chris Fleming, Justin Benoit, Alexandra White, Brandon Erickson, Brooke and Bryce Derouin, Rick Jr. and Nick Benoit. Clarence is also survived by his sisters, Jean (George) Gontscharow and Beverly Robitaille; brother, Donald Benoit; brother-in-law, Jon Servant; sister-in-law, Julie Servant; numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Eva Benoit; his first wife, Mary Lou; sister, Verna (Fred) Farmer; brother, Stanley (Marlin) Benoit; mother-in-law, Myrtle Tebear; brother-in-law, Wayne Servant; and sister-in-law, Marlene Servant.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 5 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba. The Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 3 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 6 p.m. at St. Anne's Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Entombment will be in Gardens of Rest Mausoleum.

The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the Benoit family with arrangements.
