ESCANABA - Stanley Majcher, 96, of 2900 3rd Ave. S., Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba. He was born on June 11, 1916, in Mielnik, Poland, and was the son of Aleksandra Sprazynska and Stanlislaw Majcher. Stanley attended school in Poland and graduated from high school there. A captured Polish fighter pilot, he was a survivor of the Katyn Forest Massacre. He had a pistol held just inches from his head and was ordered to dig his own grave. He refused and lived to tell about it. With God, courage, gallantry and honor he made his way from Siberia to England and fought World War II in the English Royal Air Force as a Polish fighter pilot. After the war Stanley came to the United States to be with his cousin in Detroit and became an American citizen.

On Sept. 8, 1951, Stanley married the former Sophie Michalak in Hamtramck, Mich., and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2000. For many years Stanley was employed by Chrysler and later managed a Sunoco gas station in Detroit until retiring to Florida in 1978. In 2005 he relocated to Gladstone to be closer to his family, residing in Fairview Manor.

Stanley was of the Catholic faith. In his spare time he enjoyed singing, dancing the polka and making homemade kielbasa.
