HARBOR SPRINGS - The Manistique girls took charge in the second quarter Wednesday night, earning a 51-32 basketball triumph over the Harbor Springs Rams in a Class C district opener.
The contest was tied at 8 after the first quarter. The Emeralds then hit 10-of-12 free throws in the second stanza and led 29-21 at halftime.
"I think it was a lot of jitters for us in the first quarter," said Emeralds' coach Kelley Spettel. "Then, we really started to play basketball. We got them into foul trouble and went to the line quite a bit. We were also able to push the ball up the floor and got some fast breaks. We were rebounding well. We got the outlet pass and were off to the races."
The victory sends Manistique (7-14) to the championship game at Newberry (3-14), which tips off Friday at 7 p.m.
Kyra Lauzon scored 16 points for the Emeralds, who committed 17 of their 29 turnovers in the first half.
"Kyra struggled a little bit in the first half," said Spettel. "Then, she got some real good looks at the basket and had a better second half. We were also trying to force some passes in the first half."
