ESCANABA - A raceday decision paid off for Dan DeLong of Norway Sunday as he won the 29th Annual Slip-Sliding-Away five-mile run in 30 minutes, 15 seconds.
"I wasn't sure about coming over here today," said DeLong, head girls' track coach at Escanaba High School. "You never know (what kind of weather) you're going to get this time of year. But it was a beautiful day and I was hoping to get here and get a time trial in. It was nice to see so many of the younger kids here, too."
Esky senior Andrew Stenberg was runner-up (31:23), followed by Gary Whitmer of Gladstone (31:49).
Jill Richard of Garden was crown women's champion in 37:01, followed by Esky junior Aubree Peterson (37:45) and Kaylyn Bernard of Escanaba (39:32).
"I think it went very well," said Richard. "I was little nervous coming over here because I ran in the race (Bot Trot 5-K at Gladstone) yesterday. Aubree and Kaylyn helped me today. They were pushing out there."
Brittany Richard (Jill's daughter), who's running track at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this spring, was women's champion a year ago.
