STATESVILLE, N.C. - Paul James Yates, 25, of Statesville, N.C., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C.

He was born Dec. 9, 1987, in Hartlepool, England. At the age of 5 he moved to the Upper Peninsula. Paul graduated from Escanaba High School with the class of 2006. He then served in the U.S. Marines being stationed in North Carolina. Paul went back to civilian life and met Cassandra Layell, his fianc, who he was to marry in October of 2013. Paul loved life and lived life to the fullest. He was a leader and a person that helped others first. He had a heart big enough to touch everyone. Paul enjoyed music, deer hunting and family always came first. The Upper Peninsula was always considered home to Paul.

Paul James Yates is survived by his fiancCassandra Layell; mother, Stacey (Jeff Kossow) Yates; brothers, Gavin Yates, Robert Heath; sister, Bailey Manninen; grandfather, Papa Ron Yates; grandmother, Kay Forgette; aunts, Louise Burke, Christina Gascon, Beth Peterson, Gina Homminga; uncles, Scott Burke, Rick Burke, Jaime Peterson, and Scott Homminga.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Delta County Veteran's Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services celebrating the life of Paul James Yates will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Harman officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral services at the Central United Methodist Church fellowship hall.
