ESCANABA - A pole building and its contents were destroyed by fire in Wells Township early this morning, according to Escanaba Public Safety. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters were dispatched at 1:50 a.m. to the report of a structure fire at 5043 M.5 Lane. Upon arrival, the building was engulfed with flames and several small explosions were occurring inside, officials stated in a news release today.
"Suppression was difficult due to the contents and material that made up the structure," said Det. Lt. Darin Hunter. "Firefighters battled the blaze for four hours before clearing the scene."
The building and its contents were a total loss; value of the property destroyed is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, added Hunter.
Assisting Public Safety at the scene were the Ford River Township Volunteer Fire Department, Rampart Emergency Medical Services, the Upper Peninsula Power Company, and the Delta County Road Commission.
Earlier Thursday night, Escanaba Public Safety also responded to the report of the smell of smoke in a downtown building at 11:55 p.m. Firefighters responded to the scene at the Escanaba Eagles building at 608 Ludington St. but could not locate the source of the smoke smell, said Hunter.
