CORNELL - Bruce and Stella Andrews are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary today. Bruce and the former Stella Polmateer eloped to Lake Linden to be married on Feb. 19, 1953, by the Justice of the Peace.
They later renewed their vows at the Resurrection Catholic Church in Lansing. George and Peggy Dahl of Lansing attended the couple. After the ceremony Stella's mother, Ruth Polmateer, prepared a celebratory dinner for family and friends.
The couple have made their home in many places, starting in Escanaba, Hancock, Newberry, Munising, Sault Ste. Marie, Lansing, and Fenton, before returning to Escanaba when Bruce retired in 1984.

Bruce served in the Korean War and upon his return from military service, he resumed his job with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. He was a tower man in Hancock and later was then promoted to conservation officer, serving in the Upper Peninsula and at the head office in Lansing. Prior to retiring, he was district supervisor for the Pontiac Lake Area.
Stella began her career working for Michigan Bell Telephone Company in 1947, her senior year of high school. She worked many years in the Escanaba office, in Wisconsin and in Houghton. She left the work force to raise her children until her youngest child was in junior high and then began her job at Montgomery Department Store in Sault Ste. Marie as a billing clerk in the credit department. In the Lansing area she worked at the Sears Department Store.
Bruce and Stella traveled throughout the United States and Canada along with with her sister and brother-in-law, Ray and Pat Menard. They enjoyed many wonderful times visiting new places and family in various places throughout the U.S.
The couple's family includes sons, Steven and Sidney (Betty), both of Escanaba; daughter, Julie (Bob Lewis) of Hastings, Mich., and Michael (Karine) of San Diego, Calif; grandsons, Benjamin (Lauren) Andrews of Sault Ste. Marie, Steven (Carolyn) Andrews of Traverse City, and Samm Lewis of Hastings, Timm Lewis, who is attending Wester Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and Macky Lewis also attending WMU.
They also have one great-granddaughter, Isabella Andrews of Sault Ste. Marie.
Bruce and Stella will celebrate their anniversary this summer along with their children and grandchildren.
