HIAWATHA TOWNSHIP - Clyde O. Chartier, 89, of Hiawatha Township, Manistique, Mich., died Jan. 20, 2013 at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming, Michigan.
He was born Jan. 1, 1924, in Manistique, the son of Joseph and Eva (Meron) Chartier and was a lifetime resident. He was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales School and Manistique High School.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European, Middle-Eastern and African Theaters.

On Feb. 2, 1948, he married the former Barbara B. Hoholik in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique.
Clyde owned and operated Chartier's Service Station on Manistique's west side for 18 years and later worked as an electrician at Inland Lime and Stone Co. in Gulliver until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique; the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post 4420 of Manistique, the D.A.V. Chapter 26 of Manistique; the Manistique Elks Lodge 632, the Manistique Moose Lodge 1972, and formerly the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He loved spending time with family and friends at deer camp, having fun and having a good laugh. He was a boat enthusiast and enjoyed boat building.
He was a man with a creative mind that never stopped. He forever kept himself busy inventing and designing, making improvements and modifying, not only for his benefit, but for the benefit of friends and family as well.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Barbara B. Chartier of Manistique; son, Ryan (Jackie) Chartier of Marquette; daughter, Sharon (Kenneth) Haines of Park City, Ky.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Cletus Chartier of Manistique; sisters, Eloise Poupore of Cooks and Charlene Husar of White Pine, Mich.; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth, William, Patrick, Francis "Fred", Joseph "George" and Lewellyn Chartier; and his sisters, Charmaine Chartier and Loretta Chartier.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at the church with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial will be in the Hiawatha Township Cemetery in Manistique.
Memorial donations may be directed to the Manistique Senior Center.
