MANISTIQUE - Eleanore M. Multhaupt, 92, of 520 Michigan Ave., Manistique, died Jan. 7, 2013, at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.
She was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Mansfield, the daughter of Fred and Margaret (Mayer) Bates and was a graduate of Crystal Falls High School in Crystal Falls. She continued her education at a fashion design and dress making school in Chicago, graduating in 1939. During World War II, she served with the Signal Corp. in Detroit.
On Jan. 18, 1943, the former Eleanore M. Bates married Benjamin R. Multhaupt in Toledo, Ohio. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique.
In addition to being a homemaker, Eleanore and Ben owned and operated Multhaupt's Hardware Store in Manistique from 1947-1960.
Eleanore was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique, was a member and past-president of both St. Anne's Altar Society and St. Martin's Circle, was head of the Manistique Deanery for two years, and was also a member of the Manistique Amity Homemakers Club. She was an original member of Schoolcraft County's C.B.C. fund drive, was an original member of Manistique's St. Vincent de Paul and served as a Girl Scout leader.
She enjoyed crocheting afghans and being with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed making trips with Electrolux, trips with Aunt Loretta, camping with Debbe, and going to the casino.
Eleanore is survived by her husband, Benjamin R. Multhaupt of Manistique; sons, Ronald (Carol) Multhaupt of Clarkston and Rande (Laurel) Multhaupt of Grand Forks, N.D.; daughters, Diane M. Carlson of Manistique, Debbe (Dennis) St. Pierre of Manistique and Dore (David) Miljour of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Fred "Buck" (Beverly) Bates of Crystal Falls; along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. Funeral services will follow at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Celebrant Carole Cooper officiating.
Burial will be held in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique. Memorial donations may be directed to C.B.C. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
