Joseph ‘Joe’ W. Stier

ESCANABA - Joseph "Joe" W. Stier, 73, Escanaba, passed away on Friday Jan. 4, 2013, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.

He was born on Feb. 1, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of the late Joseph and Luella (Kositzky) Stier. On Dec. 27, 1962, he married the former Helga Kuhn in Gladstone.

Joe was a member of the Vietnam Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and was very active in the community. He served his country in the U.S. Army retiring after 20 years.

He served in Korea for one year and Vietnam for two years and also recieved a Bronze Star. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding 4-wheelers and belonged to the SORVA 4-Wheeler Club.

He is survived by his wife; two children, Tina (Sam) Steen and Bill (Debbie) Stier; two brothers, Richard Stier and Phil (Pam) Johnson; four grandchildren, Danielle, Nick, Mandie and Ben; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Escanaba. A funeral service will be celebrated at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at church with Pastor Paul Doletzky officiating. The Delta County Veterans Council will have prayers following the funeral in the chapel at Gardens of Rest Cemetery. A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall.
