SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Gerald "Mick" McDonough of San Luis Obispo, Calif., passed away on Dec. 23, 2012.
Mick was born in Manistique to Thomas and Margaret McDonough on Aug. 13, 1936. He and his family moved to Escanaba when he was 5 year old. Mick attended both elementary and high school at St. Joseph Catholic School in Escanaba, graduating in 1954.
Mick was an honored athlete at St. Joseph, earning nine varsity letters in baseball, basketball, and football. Following graduation and a semester at St. Norbert's College in DePere, Wis., Mick enlisted in the United States Air Force. After basic training and a year of special weapons training at Lowry AFB, in Denver, Colo., he was assigned to Bitburg AFB in Germany. Although he was assigned to a special weapons detachment, most of his time was spent in athletics, playing baseball, basketball and soccer throughout Europe. Mick was honorably discharged from the Air Force in March of 1959. After a few months at home he followed his dreams and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area of California.

Mick married Nancy Spalding in Sunnvale, Calif. in 1973.
He secured employment at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company (LMSC) where he would spend the next 33 years starting as an electronics technician, and ending his Lockheed career as Director of Product Assurance in the Advanced Technology/Missiles Systems Division. Upon his retirement from LMSC, Mick joined ARGO Systems a small electronic warfare company in Sunnyvale, Calif., as the manager of product assurance.
Mick retired from employment in November 1999 and moved to San Luis Obispo with his wife, Nancy. In San Luis Obispo, Mick was a member of the Knights of Columbus, SLO Council 1271 and three terms as Grand Knight, and Faithful Captain of the 4th degree. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 66, the Elks Lodge 322, and Retired Active Men (RAM), group 2. He was also vice president of the Cuesta College Athletic Booster Club. He was an ardent San Luis Blues baseball fan, rarely missing a home game. He also remained a die hard San Francisco Giant and 49er fan. Mick was also a faithful parishioner of the Old Mission Church, San Luis Obispo.
Mick is survived by his wife, Nancy of San Luis Obispo; daughter, Tara McDonough of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Colleen (Scott) Bye of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; brother, Terry (Cindy) McDonough of Gladstone; sister, Colleen (Dennis) Kane of Escanaba; cousin, Robert Sendenburgh of Escanaba; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mick was preceded in death by his mother, Peg in 2011; his father, Tom who passed away in 1991; and infant son, Mark who died in 1967.
Funeral services will be held in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
