I have watched with interest the conversation in the Daily Press regarding actions this fall by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at Delta County Airport. We take seriously the problem of any wildlife on airport property. We recognize in these circumstances the very real potential for wild animals to compromise safety.
When we heard reports of a bear at Delta County Airport, DNR staff member Craig Albright worked closely with airport officials to address their concerns, and did so in a timely and appropriate fashion. At every step Craig consulted his immediate supervisor and department leaders in Lansing, who have decades of collective experience in wildlife management. I fully support the decisions made by these DNR professionals. Craig and other DNR employees acted with the clear understanding that their primary task was to work in partnership with the appropriate people to protect human safety and maintain airport operations.
We at the DNR recognize the vital need to safeguard citizens while managing wildlife populations. We will continue to work cooperatively with members of the community to ensure that human health and safety are not compromised by Michigan's abundant wildlife.
