Christmas in the Village

December 24, 2012
Daily Press
It has been 15 years and the decorative Christmas village owned by Kay Maynard of South Escanaba has expanded from one original ice rink given to her as a gift, to a collection of approximately 52 buildings. Setting up the village and the accompanying figurines takes a week worth of work and over 30 yards of quilt batting used for snow. After Christmas the batting is donated to Bethany Lutheran Church in Escanaba, where it is used to make quilts. Maynard had considered this being the last year for her village, but her grandson encouraged her to keep up the “tradition.” Maynard’s grandson, Sean Bellows, 10, of Wells, who helped to set up the village this year, watches as the figurines on the ice rink spin and skate around.
