ESCANABA - Margaret A. "Maggie" (Hughes) Melton, 88, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, Dec. 16, 2012, at the Christian Park Village in Escanaba.
Maggie was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Groos, the daughter of Ruben and Eva (Vennstrom) Clouse. She was raised in Groos and was a 1941 graduate of the Escanaba High School. Following graduation, Maggie enrolled at Cloverland Commercial College where she received her secretarial/bookkeeping certification. In addition to successfully raising eight children, Maggie worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for various employers throughout her remarkable life.
Maggie was a Wells Lioness, as well as, a member of Sweet Adeline's Chorus (aka "Jack Pine Jills") for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and craftwork. Maggie was a wonderful woman who cultivated a multitude of friendships over the course of her life and will be deeply missed by her loving family.

Survivors include her sons, Jim (Kathy) Hughes of Escanaba, Tom Hughes of Escanaba, Bill (Mary Snodgrass) Hughes of Moline, Ill., Dan (LaLa) Hughes of Escanaba, Rev. Paul (Connie) Hughes of Wichita, Kan., Greg (Michelle) Hughes, Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Mary (Rick) Larson of Rock, Susan Hughes-Vitte of Richland, Wash.; brother-in-law, Hank (Ileen) Hughes; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Zella, Jane (Harvey) Hewitt, Kate Perry, Grace Hughes, Mona Hughes and Myrt Hughes. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Eva; and brothers, Evert, Percy and Donald Clouse.
Maggie's family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Escanaba. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Margaret A. "Maggie" (Hughes) Melton will follow visiting hours at 6 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Escanaba with Maggie's son, Rev. Paul Hughes, officiating.
