John L. Marcella

GLADSTONE - John L. Marcella, 80, of Gladstone, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, at his home.

John was born Aug. 29, 1932, in Gladstone, the son of John and Katherine (Burcar) Marcella. He was raised on the family farm in Cornell and graduated from the Escanaba Senior High School. He continued to work on the farm for many years following school and at the Eaton Corporation in Gladstone for over 30 years.

John served his country proudly while enlisted in the United States Navy. He was a longtime member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock and the Knights of Columbus Council 640 in Escanaba. John was united in marriage to the former Rita Hemil, who preceded him in death. He later married Kathy Carignan in Gladstone in 1985. John enjoyed spending time working on his home, his flowers and his garden. He was a wonderful, gentle and kind man who put everyone before himself. He will be dearly loved and missed by his family and friends.

John is survived by four daughters, Maria (Mark) Greenough of Escanaba, Josephine Palmer of Gladstone, Catherine (John) Anderson of Cornell and Rene (Mike) Boddy of Gladstone; five sons, Master Chief USN John (Patcharee) Marcella stationed on the USS George Washington, Chuck (Donna) Marcella of Alabama, Tony (Angie) Marcella of Gladstone, Matt (Rosanne) Marcella of Escanaba and David (Lynn) Carignan of Little Suamico, Wis.; 22 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one sister, Deloris (Donald) Owens; three brothers, Rudolph, Robert (Terry) Marcella and Walter Marcella; numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful pet, Reggie. He was preceded by his parents; his first wife, Rita; a sister, Josephine Nelson; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Marcella; and a son, John Carignan.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Dec. 19 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 6 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Flat Rock with Rev. Fr. Jose Maramattam officiating. A luncheon will be served in the Father Matt fellowship immediately following services. John will be laid to rest in the Flat Rock Cemetery.
