Miners get early jump, roll Miners

December 1, 2012
Daily Press

MANISTIQUE - The Negaunee girls got an early jump on Manistique Friday night, handing the Emeralds a 56-43 basketball loss.

Negaunee led 14-7 after the first quarter and 31-21 at halftime of the Mid-Peninsula Conference match-up.

"The first quarter definitely hurt us," said Emeralds' coach Kelley Spettel. "They pushed the ball up and down the floor, and we had some match-up problems. At halftime, we made some adjustments and the girls came out fired up (in the third quarter). Only, we couldn't get over that hump. They had an answer for everything we tried to do."

The victory enabled the Miners to improved to 2-0.

Kyra Lauzon scored 11 points for Manistique, which fell to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the M-PC. Lexi Carlson grabbed 10 rebounds, blocked for shots and collected three steals. The Emeralds played without Mindy Hoholik, who was attending another school activity.

"For a freshman, Lexi did pretty good for a freshman against Negaunee," said Spettel. "Overall, we didn't rebound as well as we would have liked."
