WAKEFIELD - A registered sex offender from Wakefield has been arrested for loitering within a school zone.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post began investigating a report of the 64-year-old male rummaging through trash dumpsters on the Wakefield-Marenisco School campus Tuesday.
Investigation into the incident revealed the man, a registered sex offender, had been rummaging through dumpsters there on a weekly basis looking for clothing and notes of the students, according to a news release from Michigan State Police.
Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for the subject on Wednesday, and he was arrested without incident at his Wakefield residence.
The man is charged with registered sex offender loitering within a student safety zone, a one-year misdemeanor.
The subject was lodged at the Gogebic County Jail. Cash bond has been set at $1,000.
A subsequent conviction is a two-year felony and carries a fine of $2,000.
