GFWC Charity Ball scheduled for Saturday

November 27, 2012
Daily Press

ESCANABA - The 62nd annual Charity Ball, sponsored by the GFWC Escanaba Woman's Club, will be held Saturday and will feature the theme Circa 1930's "Hollywood Glamor." Proceeds from the event go towards the club's long standing program of providing warm winter clothing and other basic needs to area children that need a helping hand.

This is the club's only major fund-raiser and also supports other charitable donations to the community such as the Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and other organizations that make this community a better place to live.

Charity Ball has been the highlight of the year for the club since 1950 when the first event was held. A lot has changed over the years but what has remained constant is the club's dedication to the community and to having a grand time at the ball every year.

This year the event will be held at the Island Resort and Casino Convention Center to better accommodate the expected attendance. Entertainment will be provided by Emcee Mitch Taylor of Taylored Entertainment and will feature a true Red Carpet Hollywood arrival, with guests having the option of being announced as they arrive and interviewed by two club fashion reporters, anxious to talk about how "fabulous" the guests look in their apparel. Attire for the event can run the gamut from 1930's style evening gowns or tuxes - ala Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - to cocktail dresses and jacket and tie or simple holiday casual attire - whatever gets guests in the mood for the holidays.

Guest will have the option of bidding on an amazing array of silent auction items, all beautifully staged, or the Wine Basket and Bushel of Booze, which has become a favorite mainstay of charity balls. Door prizes will be announced throughout the evening as well. The highlight will be a dozen decorated wreathes that will be part of the silent auction, donated by area businesses and individuals.

Guests wishing to reserve a table should do so as soon as possible by calling Barby at 474-9321. Tickets are $50 each and are available at The Morrison Shop, Gust Asp, Lisa Ann, all in downtown Escanaba, or Darmograys Custom Jewelers in Gladstone.

Anyone who prefers to have their tickets mailed or delivered to their place of business is asked to let Barby know when they make their table reservations.

Meal selections this year are prime rib, Chicken Madeira and grilled salmon. Guests are encouraged to arrive through the entrance to the Convention Center at the far rear of the casino complex and are also encouraged to consider spending the night at the Casino hotel where a block of rooms has been set aside.
