Jack Beck's editorial in Tuesday's paper must have contained an error. Jack, did you mean to say that the Esky 150 committee has been working "diligently" for two years while also being "lax"?
Did you mean that the "well over 200 people" working behind the scenes have also been lax? At a time when so many are working so hard to create a wonderful celebration of Escanaba's 150th birthday, it makes no sense that one of the many would choose to suggest that others are not doing a proper job. I am thoroughly confused.
Did I miss the news that a vacancy existed in the curmudgeon department in Escanaba? If so, I am happy to thank Jack Beck for apparently assuming the role.
What I didn't miss were the announcements in this newspaper, or the word-of-mouth excitement being spread, or the web site that is noted everywhere. The committee is doing an excellent job of encouraging unity and pursuit of common goals.
So, please Jack, tell me that the word "lax" was misused in the editorial, or that I have misunderstood the meaning of the word.
Please tell me that your good intentions were carelessly overrun by some mischievous word demon.
The rest of the editorial was fine. I applaud you for taking advantage of the opportunity to write it and others. In the interest of fairness, I point out that, although I was not officially appointed to the Esky 150 committee, I attend most meetings. And I am one of the many who are working on events for July 2013.
