MANISTIQUE - Lewellyn G. Chartier, 81, of 6390W Hillcrest Drive, Manistique, Mich., died Nov. 24, 2012, at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique.
He was born March 5, 1931, in Manistique, the son of Joseph and Eva (Mero) Chartier. He was a graduate of St. Francis School and Manistique High School with the Class of 1951.
From 1951 to 1955 he served in the U.S. Navy on a destroyer, seeing duty throughout the world.
On Jan. 10, 1958, he married the former Shirley A. Liberty in Menominee, Mich. They made their home in Wisconsin for several years and moved to Manistique in the early 1990s following their retirements.
After becoming a baker in the Navy, and working at a few bakeries, in 1961, Lew accepted a position with the food service department in the student union at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He retired from the university as a food production manager.
He was a member of the Manistique Elks Club, the Schoolcraft County VFW Post 4420 of Manistique, and the American Legion in Sauk City, Wis. Upon returning to Manistique, he enjoyed playing golf with the men at the Indian Lake Golf and Country Club.
Lew is survived by his wife, Shirley A. Chartier of Manistique; brothers, Clyde (Barbara) Chartier of Manistique and Cletus Chartier of Manistique; sisters, Eloise Poupore of Cooks and Charlene Husar of White Pine; along with several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, James P. Chartier; and his brothers, Kenneth, William, Patrick, Francis "Fred" and Joseph "George" Chartier.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran's memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique with Father Glenn Theoret officiating.
