ESCANABA - Joanne (Jaeger) Latva, 78, of 1617 S. 17th Ave., Escanaba, passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.
She was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Escanaba and was the daughter of wonderful parents, Peter Fred and Rose (Steinmetz) Jaeger. Joanne graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1951.
She worked for Michigan Bell for 27 years, spending a portion of the time working in Kalamazoo before returning to Escanaba. She married the love of her life, Howard "Howie" Latva in April 11, 1981. They spent 31 magnificent years together traveling extensively throughout the United States, spending a majority of their winters in Arizona and Florida.

Joanne enjoyed playing golf and socializing at the Escanaba Country Club. She was also involved in many local groups including Northern Delights Red Hatters, Ladies of the Bluff Book Club and Sew & Sew Group. Joanne loved to read, walk and knit meaningful gifts for her family and friends.
Being surrounded by her family and friends made her last few weeks the best of her life. Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, family and friends who opened their hearts to give her the best care imaginable.
Joanne Latva is survived by her loving husband, Howie; son, Michael Petersen of Green Bay, Wis.; daughter, Rose Michelle "Shelly" (Clarence) Fazer of Powers, Mich.; five grandchildren, Holli (Bucky) Lange, Matt Petersen, Nikki (Alex) Koch, Kristy Fazer and Bryant (Erin) Fazer; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Koch, Connor Lange, Sophia Lange, Ally Koch, Grant Petersen, Callie Rose Fazer, Madden Koch; two brothers, Ronald (Verna) Jaeger of Gladstone and John (Maxine) Jaeger of Escanaba; and several very much loved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and Grant Petersen, the father of her children.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Escanaba from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with the rosary to be recited at 3:30 p.m. The funeral mass will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Anne's Church with Rev. Fran DeGroot officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Escanaba Public Library.
