Joel P. Erickson

ESCANABA - Joel P. Erickson, 61, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at the University of Wisconsin in Madison following a lengthy illness.

Joel was born July 16, 1951, in Escanaba, the son of Wendell and Marie (Taylor) Erickson. He attended St. Thomas Catholic Grade School and the Holy Name High School, graduating with the Class of 1969. He was united in marriage to Renee Decker, their union lasting for over 38 years. Joel worked as a sales manager with the Delta Do It Center in Escanaba. He was known as the "Lumber Man." He was an active member with the Wheeling Sportsmen, U.P. Whitetails, National Wildlife Turkey Federation, Great Lakes Sport and Rec Club, Krusin Klassics and the Escanaba Pool League. He loved being outdoors and was an avid hunter. He was a Jack of All Trades and enjoyed working in his garage and on his hot rods. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Joel is survived by his wife, Renee; two sons, Jeffrey (Stacy) and Jeremy (Jerilyn); two grandchildren, Kyle and Olivia; four brothers, Jeff (Carrol), Jim, Mike and Steve (Tracy); three sisters, Pam Anderson, Wendy Erickson and Mary Jean (Glen) Leisner; brother-in-law, Mike (Kathy) Decker; sister-in-law, Sandra Oliver; numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Bekka Sue.

He was preceded in death by his parents and mother and father-in-law, Elizabeth and Joseph Decker; sister-in-law, Terry Decker; and brother-in-law, Thomas Oliver.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Skradski Family Funeral Home in Escanaba. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, at the St. Thomas Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Rick Courier, Rev. Fr. Emmett Norden and Rev. Fr. Gil Neurohr officiating. A luncheon will be served following services in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joel's name may be directed to the family to be donated to a charity of their choice.
