ESCANABA - Evelyn Marie Skellenger, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, died peacefully at Christian Park Village on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012. She was born in 1917 and grew up in North Escanaba.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Byron (Bob) Skellenger; her mother and father, Ida and Peter Wurth; as well as her brother, Bob; and sisters, Gerry Baum and June Sjoquist; and infant daughter, Marie Lee.
Evelyn held at her core love for her family including her four children, her grand and great-grandchildren, and all close and distant relatives scattered throughout the area. She was compassionate and concerned for others, whether a child without a winter jacket or a Packer football player who missed an extra point. Her hutch drawer was filled with greeting cards for every occasion which she mailed out weekly. Evelyn's legacy will always be how she cared for and loved those around and beyond her.

She was regularly in the stands of Gladstone football or basketball games, with her husband, or her close friend, Jane. She was at every 4th of July parade, crying happy tears. She loved cooking and baking and understood the comfort of food sharing it with family, friends and the community. Her mustard and freezer jam were favorites. She played golf until she couldn't any more, and supported the Gladstone Golf Club. She was also active in the Study Club, the Child Welfare League, and many bridge clubs. Her faith in God guided and sustained her. She was a long time member of First Lutheran Church.
Evelyn Marie Skellenger is survived by her four children, Marcia Carlson of St Paul, Minn., Lynda (Guy) Donovan of Kingsford, John (Ruthann) Skellenger of Gladstone and Robert (Marsha) Skellenger of Gladstone; her grandchildren, John Carlson, Jim (Melissa) Carlson, Erin (Erik) Biggs, Geoff (Tina) Carlson, Cindy (Todd) Zerger, Elly Skellenger, Chelsea (Greg) Elliott, Bill (Kim) Skellenger, Peter Skellenger, Dan Skellenger and Joe (Erica) Skellenger; great-grandchildren, Brandon Carlson, Owen and Sunshine Carlson, Emma and Ian Skellenger, Evan and Jaden Skellenger, Devin and Griffin Zerger; many nieces and nephews and her longtime friend, Jane Empson.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the First Lutheran Church in Gladstone. Funeral services celebrating the life of Evelyn Marie Skellenger will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Rev. Jonathan Schmidt and Rev. Paul Strom officiating. A luncheon will be served in the church fellowship hall following the funeral services. Burial will take place in the Fernwood Cemetery.
The family is grateful for the kindness, caring and prayers of many friends including the staff at Lakeview Assisted Living where she lived before moving to Christian Park Village. There Evelyn received compassionate attention and care until her death. The family would also like to thank the staff and volunteers of OSF Hospice who provided individualized comfort and attention to her in this last year of her life.
