By Kyle Whitney , Marquette Mining Journal

MARQUETTE - Democrat John Kivela collected more than 58 percent of the vote Tuesday and was elected to represent the state's 109th District in the Michigan House.

"I'm very humbled by the great turnout of support and I look forward to serving this district," Kivela said this morning.

Kivela of Marquette defeated Jack Hubbard, R-Grand Marais, by a vote of 23,321 to 16,583.

During the campaign, both candidates touted their experience in state and local government. In his six years on the Marquette City Commission - four as mayor - Kivela has worked with Lansing on numerous issues and highlighted professional relationships with state legislators and Gov. Rick Snyder's administration.
