GARDEN - Three boaters and a dog are still awaiting rescue from Big Summer Island in Garden Township where they became stranded after their boat overturned Monday.
Mark Sable, of Alpena, contacted the Coast Guard by marine radio after his 15 foot aluminum boat overturned due to high waves. Sable informed the Coast Guard that he, two other adults, and a dog were stranded on what he believed was the north side of the island.
Sable lost contact with Coast Guard officials when the radio battery died and he was left without cell phone reception. Delta County Sheriff Department deputies attempted a rescue, but could not dock the department's patrol boat on the island due to waves.
The stranded party informed authorities Sable owned a cabin on the island and there was enough food for three days. The boat is still overturned, but is connected to an anchor.
Plans are to rescue the stranded boaters as soon as waves subside.
