Francis J. Derocher

BARK RIVER - Francis J. Derocher, 88, of 1160 12th Road, Bark River, passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital.

Fran was born in Bark River on Jan. 18, 1924, the son of Fred and Laura (Swille) Derocher. He attended grade school in Bark River and graduated from Escanaba High School. He lived most of his life in Bark River.

Fran worked construction for a while and later was employed with his father, who owned The Derocher Market in Bark River. Fran later owned and operated the store for many years.

Fran was a veteran of World War II, from Dec. 4, 1942, until his discharge on March 19, 1946. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Ribbon.

Francis enjoyed playing the harmonica, collecting war memorabilia, playing cards, taking his grandchildren target shooting at camp, reading and photography. He enjoyed being with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Francis Joseph Derocher married Bertha DeBen on Aug. 13, 1949, at St. Mary's in Norway. She preceded him in death on May 15, 2006.

Francis was a former member of the Bark River-Harris School Board and Bark River Township Treasurer for many years.

He was a life member of the Escanaba VFW Post 2998, AmVets Post 123, Hannahville American Legion Post 116 and the Delta County DAV Chapter 24. He was a past commander of Bark River American Legion Post 438, member of the 40 et 8.

Survivors include: two sons, Stephen of Bark River, Daniel (Sharon) of Smithville, Mo.; three daughters, Joan King of Bark River, Carol Konkel of Marshall, Mich. and Joyce (Jeff) King of Gladstone; 11 grandchildren, Jenny Peterson, Vicki Walch, Dan Derocher, Tom and Katie King, Shannon, David and Erika Konkel, Chris Twardowski, Jordyn and Jeffrey King; two brothers, Louis (Nita) of Menominee, Peter (Judy) of Neenah, Wis.; two sisters Mae Brown of Bethlehem, Pa., Eleanor Murry of Nazareth, Pa., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sisters, Noelie Chenier, Rita Walsh and Rosemary Bartoszak.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River from 3 to 7 p.m. The Delta County Veterans Council will have services at 5 p.m. Funeral services will follow at the funeral chapel at 7 p.m. with Pastor Brad Cochran officiating. A luncheon will follow services at the Bark River Bible Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will be in the Bark River Cemetery.

The Crawford Funeral Homes assisted the Derocher Family with arrangements.
